Business groups challenge EPA on climate change rules

A coalition of national and state business groups launched an effort Thursday to fight new rules on greenhouse gas emissions that would affect Indiana more than most states.
 
"We will block anything that is not in the interest of the American economy," said the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Karen Harbert.
 
The coalition of 78 groups from 26 states includes the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and the Indiana Manufacturers Association.
 
A report issued Thursday from the administration of Gov. Mike Pence says Congress should quash the pending regulations because they would hike energy bills and cost jobs in Indiana.
 
Electricity rates in Indiana, which are slightly below the national average, are expected to rise about 32 percent by 2023, according to a December forecast by the State Utility Forecasting Group at Purdue University.

"The EPA is taking our country down a very dangerous path, putting our competitiveness and, ultimately, our nation's economy at risk," said Jay Timmons, head of the National Association of Manufacturers.
 
Harbert, who heads the U.S. Chamber's Institute for 21st Century Energy, said the coalition will try to influence the regulatory process and seek congressional intervention. If that doesn't work, she said, the groups will turn to the courts.
