'President Obama Has Put Politics Before the Best Interests of the Country,' Says Donohue

WASHINGTON, D.C.— U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue issued the following statement today on President Obama’s denial of the Keystone XL pipeline:

“In rejecting the Keystone XL pipeline, President Obama has put politics before the best interests of the country. Rejecting Keystone breaks two promises the president made—to put jobs and growth first and to seek bipartisan solutions.

“Keystone was passed by both houses of Congress with large bipartisan majorities, was ruled by President Obama’s own State Department to have no significant environmental impact, and would have created at least 42,000 American jobs.

“This decision is the latest in a number of administration actions—such as attempting to destroy the coal industry, over regulating natural gas, keeping 86% of American oil reserves under lock and key, and failing to improve the permitting process—that have undermined America’s energy revolution, slowed growth, and cost good-paying jobs.”

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business federation representing the interests of more than 3 million businesses of all sizes, sectors, and regions, as well as state and local chambers and industry associations.
